Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), 'Trefoil Quadrilateral' Type, Penny, 1046-1048, Sandwich, Leofwine, + EDPAR • REII, diademed and draped bust left, trefoil tipped sceptre before, rev. + LIOFPINE ON SAN, trefoil-tipped quadrilateral atop voided short cross, 0.88g [13.58grns], 6h (Hildebrand Cd; SCBI 27 [Lincolnshire], 1739; SCBI 54, 840; EMC 2024.0271 this coin; North 817; BMC IIIc; S.1174), a field find and thus with a slight porosity, formerly crimped and thus soft in parts, otherwise mostly very fine, an extremely rare mint and amongst the earliest coins struck at Sandwich

At our 2010 sale, we noted that only three other examples are listed for this type out of a total corpus of twenty eight for all issues for Sandwich before the Norman Conquest. This coin is a further example. The earliest mint signature coins for Sandwich are those of the PACX issue of Edward the Confessor. In any case no further additions have been made to the corpus via EMC
