1899 (4 Nov.) stampless envelope to Maidstone, Kent bearing two fine strikes of the Arms "commandant general" circular datestamp and countersigned by "M.T. Stiemans" in red ink, the reverse with Maidstone arrival (9.12); vertical folding crease. Sent by Lt. U.S.B. Hill of the 1st Gloucester Regiment and is believed to be the earliest known use of Officers' mail whilst being housed at the racecourse awaiting the move to Staats Model School Camp
