Stanley John Richard Pooley was born at Plymouth, Devon on 29 May 1900 attested with the Royal Navy on 8 July 1918 as a Writer 3rd Class. Pooley served aboard Tiger from 9 September 1918 until March 1920. He saw further service post-war with Hood, Devonshire and Norfolk, still serving with the latter when the Second World War began.
He was with her during the early sweep for the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst after their sinking of the Rawalpindi. However, he left in July 1940 prior to the famous hunt for the Bismark. Pooley was serving with Drake in 1941 but little else is known of his service history except that the was released on 31 August 1946.
