James Hicks was born at St. Jude's, Bristol and enlisted at Bristol likely at some stage prior to the outbreak of the Great War. The Battalion was stationed in China when the war began and as such did not enter the conflict until late in 1914. Hicks entered the war in France on 19 December 1914, and was still with the unit in May 1915 when they saw action at the Second Battle of Ypres. He was killed in action on 5 May 1915 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
