(x) Four: Corporal P. J. Hazeldine, Royal Engineers

1914-15 Star (16992 Spr: P. J. Hazeldine. R.E.); British War and Victory Medals (16992 Spr. P. J. Hazeldine. R.E.); Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (1852164 Cpl. P. J. Hazeldine. R.E.), contact marks and pitting from Star, some well-polished, fine to very fine (4)

Philip J. Hazeldine was born on 9 December 1892 and enlisted with the Royal Engineers on 9 December 1907 for a 21-year period of engagement. Given that he was just 15 years old at the time of his attestation, Hazeldine likely lied about his age in order to join the service. He was advanced Sapper on 9 December 1910 and served in this capacity with his Regiment during the Great War, disembarking in France on 11 August 1915.

Hazeldine was promoted Acting Lance Corporal on 16 December 1919 and made Acting Sergeant on 12 April 1920. However, due to unknown reasons he was reverted to Acting Lance Corporal the following month, and did not become Lance Corporal until July 1920. Hazeldine was appointed Corporal on 13 November 1921, and must have extended his service period as he continued to serve until being appointed Sergeant on 16 November 1928. He was discharged on 8 December 1931, 24 years after his enlistment.

However, this was not to be the end of his service. Hazeldine re-enlisted with the Royal Engineers for a one-year engagement period on 1 August 1939 at the age of 46, retaining the rank of Corporal. Despite re-enlisting for just one year, Hazeldine continued to serve until he was finally discharged on 5 January 1943; sold together with copied research.
