Francis Joseph Jodrell was born at Buxton, Derbyshire in 1895. Enlisting in the Royal Artillery during the Great War, he first saw service in the Gallipoli campaign where he received a gunshot wound to the shoulder on 1 October 1915. He later served in the Mesopotamia campaign with the 56th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, this unit moved to Mesopotamia on 12 of February 1916 to join the force being assembled near Sheikh Sa'ad for the relief of the besieged garrison at Kut al Amara. They joined the Tigris Corps on 27 March and were in action in the unsuccessful attempts to relieve Kut. Later seeing further fighting in The Battle of Kut al Amara, the capture of the Hai Salient, the capture of Dahra Bend and the passage of the Diyala, in the pursuit of the enemy towards Baghdad. Commissioned into the Indian army in July 1918, he saw active service on the North West Frontier of India from 1919 to 1921.
