Sidney Arthur Claridge was born in Lambeth, London on 3 February 1897, the son of Richard and Rose Claridge, and worked as a shop assistant prior to enlisting with the Royal Marines. His service began as a Boy 2nd Class aboard the Ganges on 16 May 1913. Claridge then served on the Impregnable, where he was advanced Boy Telegraphist, until moving to Vernon on 9 September 1914.
He saw brief service on a number of ships before the end of 1914, including on board Topaze, the Prince of Wales, Pembroke I, and Victorious, where he was promoted Ordinary Telegraphist. Claridge left Victorious to return to Pembroke I on 5 February 1915, serving with her for just a couple of days before moving to Dolphin. Claridge's final posting was to Maidstone on 23 March 1915, where he was appointed Telegraphist a few months later on 14 June. Claridge was but 19 years old when he died on duty on 22 August 1915 and was later memorialised on the Chatham Naval Memorial; sold together with copied research.
