Leonard Evans was born at Tenbury, Worcestershire, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Evans, of Leysters Pole, Leominster, Herefordshire. Enlisted at Middleton, Worcestershire on 11 November 1905, he first saw overseas service at Malta from 30 November 1906. With the outbreak of the hostilities he entered the war in France on 12 August 1914 and suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg on 25 September 1914, which resulted in his return home on 30 September 1914.

Returning to France almost a year later on 2 September 1915 he suffered another gunshot wound, this time to the abdomen, at Combles on 28 December 1916. He died as a result of his wounds on 29 December 1916 and is buried in the Grove Town Cemetery Meaulte, France. He was survived by his wife Fanny Evans, of Hill Cottage, Birchley Bank, Tenbury, Worcestershire.
