Joseph Walmsley was an 18-year-old sawyers' labourer from Longridge, Preston in Lancashire when he enlisted in the 1st Battalion, The Scots Guards on 6 September 1894. With the Guards, he served in South Africa from September 1899 to July 1902 and was discharged on 5 September 1906; sold together with copied service papers.
