Richard Doyle was born at St. Mary's, Drogheda, Meath, Ireland in 1878 and enlisted with the Royal Engineers on 31 October 1898. Entering the war in South Africa with No. 17 Company, Royal Engineers on 21 October 1899, he served there until 22 May 1902. Doyle's remaining service was spent in the Britain and he transferred to the Army Reserve on 10 April 1905, being finally discharged on 30 October 1910.
