John Butler was born at Allerton by Water, Pontefract, Yorkshire in 1868, and enlisted at Leeds 23 December 1892 with the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. He was still serving with this unit in the Mediterranean while the bulk of the Regular troops were stationed in South Africa for Boer War service.
