East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, Witu 1890 (A. J. Spiller, R.M.A. H.M.S. Coassack.), good very fine

A total of 90 Witu 1890 bars issued to H.M.S. Cossack.

Alfred Joseph Spiller was born at London on 17 January 1869 and enlisted with the Royal Marine Artillery on 15 November 1886 with the number 3162. His first posting afloat was with the cruiser Severn in 1888 and he was serving as Gunner with the torpedo cruiser Cossack from 1889. Whilst with her he took part in the 1890 Witu Expedition to punish Sultan Fumo Bakari for the murder of a German citizen called Behnke.

Spiller continued to serve until January 1899 when he was discharged from service. Joining the Royal Fleet Reserve in 1914 for service the Great War he appears to have served at Cromarty for the duration of the War.
