John William Jackson was born at St. Swithins, Lincoln, Lincolnshire in 1859 and attested at Aldershot on 19 February 1880. His first post abroad was to Egypt on 10 August 1882, earning an Egypt medal with no clasp but a dated reverse. Leaving Egypt the next year the Battalion joined the garrison of Malta before returning to Egypt at Suakin on 27 February 1885, earning Jackson a clasp for his medal. He later served in Cairo between September 1885 and March 1886 and, after six months in Britian, in Lower Egypt until February 1887. Further service at home and in Malta saw him take his last posting abroad in Egypt between March-October 1891.
