(x) Six: Able Seaman A. G. Kapp, South African Naval Forces, late Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who survived the sinking of Helmspey on 11 February 1943 which was torpedoed by U-516 off the coast of South Africa

Arthur George Kapp was born on 25 Janaury 1915 at Knysna, South Africa and served as a 2nd Engineer (Trawlers) before joining the South Africa Naval Forces on 1 March 1941. He served on Afrikander II between 1-28 April 1941 and then to Afrikander I from 29 April to 13 May 1941. Kapp then joined Shropshire briefly on 14 May until 23 June 1941 before returning to Afrikander I between 24 July and 12 September 1941. Kapp then served on Revenge from 13 September to 6 October 1941 ahead of brief service aboard Afrikander IV from 7 October until 17 November 1941 before again returning to Afrikander I from 18 November 1941 to 30 March 1942. Afterwards, Kapp served on Birmingham from 31 March until 27 October 1942 before serving again on Afrikander from 28 October 1942 to 19 May 1943. During this period he was aboard Helmspey when she was torpedoed on 11 February 1943 by U-516, he was swimming in the sea for 3 hours before being rescued. Finally, Kapp served on the Cape Town Detachment from 20 May until 4 August 1943 and was medically discharged on 1 November 1943. His medals were despatched on 8 November 1951; sold with copied service papers.
