Maurice Alexander Howard was born at Durban on 4 April 1919 and was a french polisher by trade. Prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, he had served with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve from 1 July 1937 to 30 June 1940. He served with the 2nd Battalion Royal Durban Light Infantry "B" Coy at Pietermaritzbug on 1 July 1940. He embarked for the Middle East on Llandaff Castle and disembarked at Suez on 12 August 1941. Howard was captured at Libya on 20 June 1942 and given POW Number 275477 and was placed in 4F Hartmansdorf Chemnitz POW camp. On release, he arrived in the United Kingdom on 29 April 1945 and returned to South Africa on 17 May 1945 where he completed his service on 30 July 1945. His Efficiency Medal was approved on 16 August 1946 and sent to him on 22 July 1947. His medals were despatched to him on 19 October 1954; sold with copied service papers.
