(x) Six: Stoker W. P. Du Plessis, South African Navy

Willem Petrus Du Plessis was born on 4 August 1905 and was a stoker by trade. He attested into the South African Navy on 26 October 1940 and saw service with the East London Detachment from 26 October to 8 November 1940, the Durban Detachment from 9 November 1940 until 25 September 1942, and briefly in the Cape Town Detachment only from 26-30 September 1942. Du Plessis then served on Afrikander I from 1-18 October 1942 and then longer aboard Sirius from 19 October 1942 to 15 April 1943. He saw service on Hannibal briefly between 16 -22 April 1943 before returning to Afrikander from 23 April to 23 July 1943, and then to Gnu from 24 July to 17 October 1943. Du Plessis briefly returned to Afrikander from 18-26 October 1943
before going to Assegai from 27 October to 10 November 1943. He then went to Tana from 11 November 1943 -until 31 January 1944 before serving on Highflyer between 1 February and 31 August 1944. After a brief bout of service on Woolwich in early September 1944, he returned to Highflyer from 14 September to 23 November 1944 before transferring to Lanka briefly from 24 November until 17 December 1944,. Finally, Du Plessis went to Kengeni (Assegai) from 18 December 1944 until 12 February 1945 before going to the South African Naval Base Congella on 13 February 1945. He was discharged on 11 October 1945, his medals were despatched to him on 23 June 1955. Du Plessis is additionally entitled to a North Africa 1942-43 clasp; sold together with the postage envelope for the medals and medal slip confirming the issue and copied service papers.
