Danel Johannes Botha was born on 18 October 1923, the son of T. L. Botha of 90 Rebecca Street, Pretoria West. Enlisting on the outbreak of the Second World War he was first posted to No. 21 Air School as part of the South Africa Air Force. It appears he did not excel there however and instead was posted to the South West African Infantry at Durban in September 1942.
Transferred to the 9th Battalion, 1st Reserve Brigade in November 1943 Botha was to serve with them until January 1944 when he joined 10th Battalion 'in the Field'. The Reserve Brigade initially consisted of 8 Battalions serving in South Africa however they were largely disbanded and re-assigned in 1942. A further four Battalions were raised the next year and served overseas as such it is likely that Botha's service with 10th Battalion was in Italy and he had served in Africa with either the South West African Infantry or 9th Battalion. He was still in service in 1946; sold together with copied research.
