Hugh McTaggart was born on 4 April 1913 and enlisted into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (South Africa) at East London on 1 June 1940. He served on Cumberland from July 1940-25 February 1942, and during this time was promoted Able Seaman on 29 May 1941. He saw service on Birmingham from 28 October 1942-15 February 1943 and was seconded to the Royal Navy in April 1943. McTaggart saw service on Lucia from 4 May 1943-17 January 1944, as well as a number of shore based establishments over time. His secondment to the Royal Navy was terminated on 8 November 1945 and was discharged on 17 April 1946.
The Cumberland was nominated for Russian Convoy operation and took passage to Murmansk. On 16 January 1942, she embarked the Foreign Secretary Sir Stafford Cripps for return passage to the U.K. and escorted return convoy QP5 from Murmansk with Icarus and Tartar. McTaggart is therefore likely to be entitled to an Arctic Star; sold with corresponding miniatures and copied service papers.
