John Mackenzie Wright was born at Stoke, Damarel, Devon on 21 June 1879 and entered the Royal Navy on 13 August 1894 as Boy Class II. Coming of age aboard Phoenix in 1897 he was advanced Able Seaman with the same vessel the next year. Promoted Petty Officer in 1909 with Arrogant he joined Fox the next year on 24 May 1910.

Wright serving with her on patrols in the Red Sea, chasing slavers and gun runners who were arming and supplying the Mullah in Somaliland. Joining Gloucester in 1911, Wright was awarded his L.S. & G.C. with her before going ashore in 1913.

Posted to Defence in January 1915, Wright served with her until March 1915. Going ashore again in March he served until January 1916 when he was finally invalided from service due to ill-health; sold together with copied service papers and medal roll. Further entitled to the 1914-15 Star Trio.
