Edward Oakes King was born on 3 August 1873 at Hutwa, India. Educated at St. Paul's School, he was further educated at the University of London in 1890. Commissioned as Lieutenant in the Indian Army on 4 August 1916, he was elevated to Captain in 1917. He married firstly Caroline Marie Cardozo in 1904; they had a daughter, Caroline Chambrelent who became a well known fashion designer in Australia. Marrying secondly in 1934 Kathleen Harrop, Oakes died on 13 February 1955 at Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India.
