Geoffrey Woodburn Gemmell was born on 29 September 1897, the son of John and Margret Gemmell. He commissioned to the unattached list on 15 November 1915 before being transferred to the Indian Army two days later. Posted to the 4th (Prince Albert Victor's) Rajputs on 18 November and served with them for the duration of the war in Mesopotamia being promoted Captain on 1 September 1917.

Gemmell remained with the Regiment after the war seeing action in Waziristan on the Northwest Frontier. Stationed in India he was advanced Major on 15 November 1933 and the Survey of India where he was advanced Colonel; sold together with a Ewart High School 1911-12 silver medal named to 'Geoffrey W. Gemmell' and copied research.
