Edward Clement Baddeley Danby was born at Liddington, Rutland on 31 May 1880, the son of the Reverend C. E. Danby. Emigrating to India he became an indigo planter, along with his brothers, on the Dholi and Bowarrah Estates near Pusa. Danby served with the 32nd Lancers, Indian Army in Mesopotamia during the First World War. He received the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal in November 1927, followed by the Efficiency Medal in September 1937.
Retiring to Cornwall, England in 1943 he died there at the impressive age of 100 in December 1980. The Centre of South Asian Studies, University of Cambridge, hold 2 boxes of correspondence and photos donated by Danby. Reference: Small Collections Box 8.
