Leonard Woodburn Gemmell was born at Partick, Glasgow on 28 May 1891, the son of John and Margret Gemmell. He joined the University of Glasgow to study medicine in 1909 and qualified as a Surgeon in 1915. Appointed Suregon Lieutenant that same year he was posted to the Royal Naval Hospital at Haslar on 6 December 1915. Gemmell served throughout the war before being advanced Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander on 26 November 1921.
Promoted Suregon Commander on 26 November 1927 he appears in the Medical Directory living at the family home of The Ewart, Newton Stewart in 1920. Gemmell returned to the land of his birth at some stage after the war however and died at Kilmarnock, Scotland in 1949; sold together with copied medal roll, Navy List and Medical Directory extracts.
