Lurgan Volunteers, crossbelt plate, gilded bronzed metal, 61mm x 80mm, all fittings present to reverse, good very fine

The Lurgan Volunteers were raised in Lurgan, County Armagh, in 1779 and first commanded by Captain the Right Honourable William Brownlow M.P. Their initial strength appears to have been 63 men inclusive of three officers, and were eventually disbanded in 1793.

Sold together with a copy of the article: 'The Lurgan Volunteers, 1779-1793' (Major A. McK. Annand) as published in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research (Vol. XLVI), which includes an illustration of the crossbelt plate and a painting of a Volunteer of the unit in uniform.
