(x) Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea, V.R., large, bronze (Thomas Ekers wreck of the Besty on the 27 September 1886.), edge bruising and pitting overall, very fine
Thomas Ekers was a commissioned boatman in the Coastguard. An article in the Manchester Evening News on 17 November 1886 refers, stating:
'The Board of Trade have awarded their silver medal for gallantry in saving life at sea, to Captain J. Campbell, magistrate; Mr John Cooper, chief boatman of Coastguard; and Tonis Pauls, a native of Heligoland; and their bronze medal and a sum of £2 each to Thomas Ekers, commissioned boatman of Coastguard ; and H. Jansen and A. Broders, natives of Heligoland, in recognition of the praiseworthy services rendered by them in rescuing, under circumstances of much risk and difficulty, the crew of the schooner, Betsy, of Portmadoc, which had taken refuge off Heligoland, in very severe weather, on the night of Sept. 27 last.'
