Richard Edmond Lake was born at Windsor in the summer of 1882 and lived in Nelson, Lancashire prior to attesting at Burnley on 28 November 1901. Posted to South Africa on 30 December of that year he served until 20 October 1902 before returning to Britain and being discharged two days later.
Returning to service on the outbreak of the Great War Lake was appointed Corporal with the Royal Army Medical Corps and entered the war in France on 18 May 1915. Later transferred to East Africa he was 'mentioned' in General Deventer's dispatch covering 1 December 1917-31 July 1918 (London Gazette 29 January 1919). Later awarded the M.S.M. and the Belgian Decoration Militaire the latter award suggests he may have had some service alongside the Force Publique. Retiring back to Lancashire Lake died at Burnley in September 1957.
