Henry Rigby was born at Cottam, Preston, Lancashire and worked as a motor driver before attesting for the Army Service Corps at Preston 19 September 1914. Oddly, he was discharged the following day unfit for the duties of the Corps, but undeterred Rigby attested a second time and this time served in France from 3 October 1914 with 116 Heavy Brigade Ammunition Column ASC. He is noted as deserting at some stage however this crime was later cancelled and struck from his record. He was awarded the M.S.M. for gallantry in the performance of military duty whilst serving with 36 Division Motor Transport Company. His home address is recorded as Moor House, Cottam, near Preston.
