James Fenton was born in 1893, a native of Blackpool and attested at Blackpool on 13 October 1914 with the 2/5th Battalion, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. Serving at home he was discharged on 5 May 1916 and re-enlisted at Grantham on 6 May 1916 with the Machine Gun Corps. Fenton entered the war in France on 23 July 1916 and joined his Company in the Field on 30 July.
Posted as Missing in Action on 12 October 1916 he re-joined the Company the next day. He served with the 9th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps during 1918, being advanced Sergeant on 2 April 1918. Finally demobilised on 2 June 1919.
