Harry Edward Smith was born at Halifax, Yorkshire on 18 March 1875 and served some five years with the 4th Battalion, Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding), before likely taking his discharge in Canada, for he thence served three years with the Princess of Wales' Own Regiment of Canada at Kingston, Ontario. By the outbreak of the Great War he was a porter living at 43 Wall Street, Brockville, Ontario and enlisted into the 156th Battalion in March 1916, sailing on 17 October 1916. Transferred to the 21st Battalion, he served in France from 21 February 1918. Smith was wounded by a gas shell on 15 August 1918 and returned to duty from hospital by 5 October 1918.
