Howard Carlingford Micklem was born on 22 April 1893 at Stockport, Cheshire. He was a Skipper prior to enlisting at Manchester on 20 November 1915. Serving overseas as part of the M.E.F. from 17 February 1916 he returned to the U.K. on 29 January 1918 and he spent the remainder of his service in Aldershot. He was demobilised on 5 March 1919.
