Five: Private S. A. Kneale, 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, who was twice wounded in action in North-West Europe

Stephen Albert Kneale appears to have served with the 1st Battalion throughout the Second World War. They served with distinction, during which Captain Marcus Ervine-Andrews earned their only Victoria Cross. Kneale certainly served during the North-West Europe campaign and was wounded in action on 2 August 1944, when the unit were operating around Gavrus, near Caen.

Recovered from his first wound, Kneale re-joined his comrades and was wounded for a second occasion on 7 January 1945, by which point the unit was at Grimbiemont in the Ardennes. After the Second World War, he served as a Storeman with the Ministry of Defence and was awarded the I.S.M. (London Gazette 14 December 1976, refers); sold together with a privately published pamphlet on the actions of the unit in France 1940, cloth badge and silver good luck charm.
