Robert Willie Matthew Thomas was born at Kilburn, London and enlisted for service with the Royal Navy on 25 June 1897. Rated as Chief Yeoman of Signals on the outbreak of the Great War with the Battleship H.M.S. Dominion, stationed with the Grand Fleet. Thomas joined the minesweeper Haldon in July 1916, this vessel struck a mine the next year on 7 August 1917 although she suffered no losses. Thomas was shore pensioned on 21 August 1918; sold together with copied research.
