John Clarke served in France from 12 October 1914 with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He then saw service in Mesopotamia and was wounded on 13 February 1916, later being attached to 33rd Divisional Signal Company, Sappers and Miners whilst serving on the North West frontier in 1919.
