James Smith was born at St. Martin, Perth, Scotland he was serving with the 7th Royal Highlanders Volunteer Battalion prior to enlisting into the Scots Guards on 7 August 1908 at Cowdenbeath. Tried by District Court Martial on 18 August 1914 for striking a superior officer he was reduced to the ranks. He saw service in France from 7 October 1914 but was discharged on 12 November 1915 as a result of a gun shot wound to the head and the thigh as well as suffering from Epilepsy and is entitled to a Silver War Badge (115930).
