Bloodhounds in Hunt for Soldiers

'Excitement was caused in the vicinity of Chichester Police Station just before eight o'clock on Monday night by the arrival of cars containing police officers, bloodhounds and half-a-dozen sturdily-built young soldiers, who were in custody, and had been at large from their unit, lately encamped in Arundel.

Their apprehension had given the police a pretty exciting chase in the country between Chichester and Bognor, in which Supt. Brett, D.C.C., had taken the lead. The search lasted a good part of the day and eventually the six men were rounded up at Bolney, near South Mundham, and brought to Chichester.

Their arrest followed on cases of breaking into premises at Bognor Regis, and on Tuesday morning the six men, who were in military fatigue dress, were brought before Mr T. L. Eastland at a hearing of the County Bench of Chichester. They were Edward Turner, John Halkerston, Gerald Lyons, James Mayes, George Higgins, and Thomas Scott, all described as being of the 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry, at Arundel, and they were charged with breaking into the office of Cyril Kenneth Wallace, at Bognor Regis, on or about September 3, and stealing the sum of £1 10s. in money and cigarettes of the value of £6.

Police-Sergeant Allmond said that the office was found to have been broken into at 7.30 a.m. on Monday, entry having been effected by breaking a pane of glass, and the property in question was found to be missing. Inquiries were made and in the evening the six prisoners were found in a field at Bolney with certain of the property in their possession. He asked for their remand in custody until regular siting (sic) of the Bench next Tuesday.

The remand was granted.'
