Mills. 3/Hrs:), mounted as worn as a group of four and a group of two, lightly toned, good very fine (6)
Burton Mills was born at Linton, Kent in 1883 and attested with the 18th Hussars as a Musician on 29 September 1898 at Canterbury, Kent. Posted to South Africa with the Regiment on 24 December 1898 where he remained until 1 November 1902.
Re-engaging on the 20 September 1910 to complete 21 years service he transferred to the 3rd Hussars two days later. With the outbreak of the Great War Mills entered the conflict in France on 15 August 1914 and served there until 21 January 1915 when he returned to France. Again ordered to France on 6 April 1918 he was wounded there on 7 August 1918 being invalided to England on 15 August 1918, as a result of his wound which further entitled him to the Silver War Badge (454085).
Serving in Germany as part of the Army of Occupation from 16 February 1919 Mills again returned to Britain on 9 October 1919. During his time in Germany he reverted back to the 18th Hussars on 10 August 1919. Strangely he appears as a deserter in the Police Gazette of 21 October 1919 having deserted on 23 September 1919 at Hounslow. Finally discharged on 23 December 1919 he died in 1959 at Maidstone, Kent; sold together with three photographs of him in uniform, one as part of a group on horseback, the other two with family members.
