William Henry Cox was born on 14 August 1879 at Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester, Lancashire. He was a Storekeeper when he enlisted into the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Manchester Regiment on 27 March 1901. Cox then enlisted and was Posted to the Cycle Company on 29 March 1901. Serving in South Africa from 13 April 1901 - 12 July 1902, returning home on 13 July 1902 and was discharged on 11 August 1902.

With the outbreak of the Great War he re-attested at Salisbury on 10 November 1914 into the 2nd Canadian Infantry, and saw service in France from 8 February 1915. He received a gunshot wound to the neck at Wimereux on 25 December 1915, and returned to the U.K. to recuperate at Broadstairs. Suffering from Neurasthenia and Myalgia for the remainder of his service career and was discharged on 10 January 1917 at Buxton, Derbyshire.
