Herbert Satterley enlisted at Cape Town on 28 November 1899, into Robert's Horse. He was present at Leeuwkop on 23 April 1900 where a British force under General Pole-Carew attacked a Boer Commando under Lemmer.

In order to delay the British advance on Dewetsdorp and protect convoys retiring on Thaba Nchu, General Lemmer took up a position across the Bloemfontein-Dewetsdorp road with his principal strength on Leeuw Kop on his left. Pole-Carew, commanding the 11th Division, successfully attacked the central position on 22 April 1900, leaving the Boers in command of only their left flank on Leeuw Kop, a position they evacuated during the night.

Satterley was slightly wounded at Leeuw Kop the next day on 23 April 1900 and was discharged on 17 September 1900 at Cape Town. Re-enlisting during the Great War as a Sapper with the South African Engineering Corps, he was later transferred to the 3rd Battalion, South Africa Infantry. Satterley died in 1926.
