Thomas McFarlane was born at Forfar, Angus in 1872 and enlisted at Glasgow on 29 December 1891. He was posted to 60 Battery, Royal Field Artillery as a Gunner in India in November 1892. Passing the board to qualify as a Shoeing Smith in October 1895, McFarlane was invalided back to Britain on 21 November 1895, being officially posted there in December with 28 Battery.
He was to see Home service until 11 September 1897 when he joined his unit in South Africa. Joining 78 Battery on the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War, he served with them for the duration of the conflict. Advanced Corporal Shoeing Smith on 12 June 1901 and Serjeant Farrier on 22 March 1902.
Remaining in South Africa after the war he was posted to India on 22 January 1904. McFarlane served there until April 1909 when he was tried and suffered a loss of seniority. Returning to Britain that same month he served on until 10 January 1910 when he was discharged at his own request.
