Alfred Bateman was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire and was a Butcher prior to attesting into the Grenadier Guards on 21 November 1892. His only overseas service was serving in South Africa between 23 May 1900 - 13 February 1903 and he was discharged on 20 November 1904.
