Charles Laslett was born in 1871 at Strood, Kent and enlisted into the 14th Hussars on 17 September 1889 at Dover, having previously worked as a labourer. Appointed Lance Corporal on 20 May 1893 he reverted to Private on 16 June 1893. Transferring to the Army Reserve on 17 September 1896 he was mobilised for service on 9 October 1899 with the 20th Hussars and embarked for South Africa on 13 December 1899.

A and C Squadrons of the regiment were sent to Durban and took part in the Relief of Ladysmith. B Squadron which was transported separately remained at the Cape. Following the relief of Ladysmith, A and C Squadrons were sent to the Cape to rejoin B Squadron. This gives A and C Squadrons a clasp combination unique to the regiment. Laslett served there until he was discharged on 28 August 1902, dying in October 1928, he is buried in the Cuxton Road Cemetery, Strood, Kent.
