Squire Tempest had been a Sergeant-Major to the Church Lads' Brigade in Wakefield and prior to being called up had served as a hospital attendant at Wakefield prison. During the Second Boer War he served with the mounted infantry under General Knox. He had also served under General Ian Hamilton and General Bruce Hamilton at the engagements at Paardeberg, Diamond Hill, Bothaville, where Colonel Le Gallais and Major Welch were killed, and Colonel Ross wounded.

Reinforced by Colonel De Lisle, afterwards they later took eight guns and waggons, and 140 prisoners. Tempest also assisted in the surrender at Princloo. he accompanied General Knox on the arduous nine weeks' chase after De Wet. He served for a total of twelve months in South Africa; sold together with several photocopied newspaper entries.
