James Vivian Joyce was born at Fordingbridge on 26 November 1859 and was a fitter when he enlisted in the Royal Navy as an Assistant E.R.A. on 7 December 1880. Posted initially to Asia, he joined Superb on 9 July 1881 and was still with her the next year at the bombardment of Alexandria. Superb fired 310 10-inch shells during the engagement and received 10 hits in turn. Afterwards Joyce rejoined Asia in December 1883. He was shore pensioned on 2 December 1902; sold together with copied research.
