(x) Pair: Private C. E. Stanley, South Staffordshire Regiment

Egypt and Sudan 1882-1889, dated reverse, 1 clasp, The Nile 1884-85 (2088 Pte. C. E. Stanley. 1/S. Staff:R.); Khedive's Sudan 1884, unnamed as issued, light pitting to first, very fine (2)

Charles Edward Stanley was born at St. Agnes, Nottinghamshire in 1859 and enlisted at Manchester on 18 July 1879 with the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot. Joining them in Britian he was still with the unit when it began the South Staffordshire Regiment and was posted to Malta in 1880. Still there two years later the Battalion joined General Wolsey's Army in Egypt during the Anglo-Egyptian War.

On landing at Alexandria they carried their colours through the city, marking one of the last occasions that a British Regiment carried its colours on active service. Returning to Malta after the war it was not long before they were again called to Egypt, this time to take part in the Nile Expedition.

Somewhat unusually Stanley does not appear to be entitled to the Kirbekan clasp which the majority of his Battalion received. Posted home from Egypt on 6 October 1885 he joined the Army Reserve on 19 October 1885. Stanley was discharged for good on 14 September 1891; sold together with copied service papers and medal roll.
