Edward Winters was born at Aston, Birmingham and was a 22-year-old gunsmith when he enlisted in the Army Ordnance Corps in October 1879. He served in Malta, Egypt and Gibraltar; his medal entitlement confirmed in his copy service papers. Winters was discharged on 22 October 1900 to resume his occupation as a gun smith in Birmingham; sold together with a corresponding miniature pair and copied research.
