Henry Softley (also spelt Softly) was born in Gayton, King’s Lynn, Norfolk, and attested there for the 5th Foot on 19 May 1858. He transferred to the 7th Foot on 1 March 1861, and served with the 1st Battalion in India for 9 years, seeing action during the Umbeyla Campaign in 1863. He was discharged on 27 May 1879, after 21 years and 9 days’ service; sold together with copied service papers.
