Joseph Coombes was born at Stirchley, Birmingham and worked as a Painter before he joined the Royal Artillery at Preston on 31 July 1888. Serving in South Africa between 1 January 1900 -3 July 1901 he was discharged on 26 July 1901.

Norman J. Coombes served overseas in the Egyptian theatre from 24 July 1915, he was also 366301 Royal Engineers.
