The Khedive's Star awarded to Private W. T. Jones, Royal Berkshire Regiment, 'the last of the Tofrek rank and file'

Khedive's Star 1884-6 (Berks 1051), good very fine

William Thomas Jones was born at Eton in October 1864 and enlisted at Reading on 5 April 1884 with the Berkshire Regiment. Posted to Egypt on 7 October 1884, He was present for both the Battle of Tofrek and the Battle of Ginnis, the latter being the last time British troops are confirmed to have worn red coats in battle.

Jones continued to serve after leaving Sudan, being appointed Effective Bandsman on 1 April 1892 and seeing a posting in Bermuda during which time he re-engaged to complete 21 years. He was discharged at Dublin on 4 April 1905 and was presented with a silver pocket watch by the Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 1st Berkshire Regiment inscribed 'Pte W T Jones last of the Tofrek rank and file'. This is now in the Regimental Museum and can be viewed on their collections website.

He died at 23 Eve Road, Maybury, Woking on 5 March 1949; sold together with copied research including service papers, medal rolls and census data.

Further entitled to the Egypt and Sudan Medal with bars for Suakin 1885 and Tofrek along with an Army L.S. & G.C.
