William Childs was born at Bermondsey on 29 August 1854, the son of Gabriel and Margaret Childs of 6 William Street, Bermondsey. He worked first as an Engineering Smith and later as an Engineer's Clerk, in which latter occupation he was employed before attesting at Westminster on 13 December 1879. Posted to the Army Hospital Corps three days later he joined them at Aldershot and served there for a year before being posted to the Straits Settlements on 28 December 1880.
Childs was imprisoned there the next year but saw out the rest of his service in the area fairly quietly before returning to Britain on 13 May 1884. The next year he joined the Medical Service Corps at Suakin on 24 February 1885, serving there until 4 January 1886. He would have had a hand in treating the casualties from the actions at Hashin, Tofrek and Ginnis in that time as well as the many soldiers who fell sick during the expedition.
Returning to Britain on 4 January 1886 he was discharged to the Army Reserve in December of that year and served there until 12 December 1891 when he was finally discharged. Childs listed his intended place of residence as 30 Raymouth Road, Southwark, Park Road, London; sold together with copied research comprising service papers, medal rolls and census data.
