One of 234 Egypt and Sudan medals issued to H.M.S. Ruby for the war of 1882, it is not known how many recipients went on to receive a clasp.
John Maynard was born at Torrington, Devon and enlisted as an 18-year-old labourer on 31 October 1867. He served aboard the screw corvette Ruby during the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War. Later returning to Egypt his service records note he was part of the Royal Marine Battalion put together to support the British effort on land. Maynard was discharged on 1 November 1888; sold together with copied research.
